Days without computer…

Have you ever calculated how many hours per day that you sit in front of your computer?

For me?? I have never counted.. and the number would be certainly horrified.

Twenty years ago, I had no idea what is computer and my life was totally fine.  When I wanted to listen to music, I have my small radio.  Television and cinema were the answer for the movies. For studying, I wrote the report, using my hand and went to the libary to seek and search for material.

Nowadays, whenever we want to do something or when to find some information, only one click will lead us a bit closer to what we want. It is quite difficult to live with computer and of course internet, don’t you think so?

From the day after tomorrow, I will have to live without personal computer for a while… and it mean that I will not update any post any time soon and I will have to stay away from the movie and music..hmm..

Life without computer might be also good..

Let’s see what my life will be with the days without computer..

Kabuki; Beauty till the Last Breath

Last week I attended the lecture about Kabuki… so fasinated..and here is what I would like to share..

Kabuki is the performance that tries to beautifully convey the philosophy of ideal society, justice and human being to the audience. For me, ideal society and justice seem to be very difficult to understand but I think I can get some sense about human being so this paper will be about it, focusing on the last moment of human being. We all human have no experience in dying but kabuki will let us experience in through the performer.

Kabuki was once the most popular entertainment in Edo period. Romantic and heroic tales were performed on stage and the performers were the superstars whose picture would be printed in the wooden block and sold for their fans to collect and their costume could create fashion trend.

In the sense of Kabuki, beauty might be interpreted as colorful and young since the leading female role will represent the female at age of less than 20 coming with elegant colorful costume. The love of young girl that displayed in Kabuki popular scene is the girl love to the bell which represented something could not be reach.

One of the most famous stories was Chuchikura which the story was related to Harakiri, the ceremony of suicide, commanded by shogun and the death belonged to both the lord and their samurai.

During Edo period, committing suicide was considered honorable and at that time many samurai traded their lives with the that glory.

Some people might perceive this scene as the expression of serving selflessness to the leader. In the other hand, we should keep in mind that at that period people should obey their placement and that would keep the order of the society which meant order of the ruler.

Many people who try to be the hero but fail to do so ended up with Harakiri and they would be given credit as they live and then died by the code of honor.  If we failed to live our lives as the ideal one then we committed suicide, would we be given that honor?

The attractiveness of Samurai way for me is about mist and encouragement that made the legend. Samurai lived for honor and glory but at the time when there was no war; Harakiri is also the way to that end. I am wondering if it worth to have the glory legend after death instead of have simple live which not glow but have potential for happiness.

. .l  am now thinking about Lieutenant Dan in Forest Gump, who firstly, wanted to die in the field with honor instead of living without legs. Then he felt thankful to Forest Gump for saving his life which he can live it happily…with artificial legs…maybe nothing to do with legs..

The beauty sense of death in Kabuki reminds me the full bloom of sakura in Hanami season. During the full bloom, the beauty reaches its peak then declining as much as the falling part. After all flower falling, people who have never seen sakura tree before might not be able to tell which is sakura tree since there will be only naked branch left. Even there is no petal on the tree, people still think and talk about that beautiful moment… I think this might be similar to the way people think about hara-kiri.

During the lecture, Prof. Hideo Furuido gave example of the last happiness before departure. Young samurai spent time with the family members in the night with no cloud then killed himself next morning. I do not know if it is related but I found something similar in the famous movie “I give my first love to you”, which the guy spend whole day with his beloved girlfriend before dying. So why should we die when we can seek for happiness??

One of my Japanese friends told me that in the country of suicide death is higher than the death of accident, dying is not the referable topic in daily life. That is why when there was somebody jumps into the railway we will be informed that there is an accident. Yes, this is accident for us since we will never predict about that but for the people who committed that, it is surely not an accident. I cannot know the reason behind the huge number of death and I am not sure if this death is different from the old day. But what is certain is that, their death will be recognized.

At this point I am not certain anymore if kabuki can convey the concept of ideal society. Even death that is displayed on stage is the combination of beauty and I have to  admit that it is really beautiful, should this scene be included in the philosophy of human living? Or it is just the brain wash message from ruler to the subordinate? and in this case the philosophy might be something to do with obedience not justice or ideal state…

It would be good if there is some scene of what is happened after death…but maybe it is just nothing… at all..

“Hula Girl”; Change is always certain

Watching movie called “Hula Girl” makes me realize again that change is always certain. The movie was on screen at my school in this evening,  provided by Karin Hillen, Director of Alumni Office.

This movie will take you back to 1970s. At that time Japan economy was not as outstanding from the other Asian countries as today but there have been many choices that Japan have made which are different from other countries.

The story started with the announcement of Hawaii dancer recruitment. That poster is posted in the rural area in Iwaki, the Northern Part of Japan which majority of population relied on mining.

Recruitment of dancer in the area of miner.. Just misplacement?

At the first time, it is more than the misplacement since both things can not be mixed in to be the proper picture either miner in Hawaii dress or Hawaii dancer works in the mine.

It sounds ridiculous and nonsense, especially for the people who know only how to work in the mine and dig the black gold. Eventually, miner, the occupation of generation to generation finally has come to an end when the mining would be closed as the mine was replaced by oil.

When the change comes, there are two choices for everyone, mitigation or adaptation? As Davinci said that, the survival is about being fit. What shall we pick? either mitigate the environment to be fit with us or adapt ourself to be fit in with the context?

To answer which choice you should make, it is not easy to tell which is right or which is wrong because when you follow one path, you have to give up another.

Whatever you choose does not matter much about if it is right or wrong but much more about which choice that would make you feel no regret after decision is made.

Love, hope, dream, laughing, friendship, joyful dancing plus music and a lot of changes will also be found in this movie. Whether you are now interested with this movie or not, I will leave some clue for you and then time to make your own choice…

Message from Mr. Kan to Japanese Student : ข้อความจากนายกถึงนักเรียน

Recently, I have chance to read message from Mr. Kan, Japan Prime Minister to the student.. The future of this country relies on this new generation. I am certain that they will together journey to the real happiness and help their country to reach a new Japan that is far better than before…

here is the message ..

To all Students Facing the New School Year,

For those of you entering junior and senior high school, and to those students promoted to the next grade level, we would like to express our congratulations to you all at the start of the new school year.

This April was supposed to be a season full of hope. Spring, however, turned out to be a painful time for everyone. As you are all well aware, an unprecedented, massive earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on March 11th. I believe there are students who have lost family members or are commuting to schools directly from temporary shelters.

We have heard of many cases in these shelters where students have taken the initiative in helping the elderly and disabled through cleaning up and preparing food. I have also heard that many of you have actively taken part in volunteering. I sincerely thank you for all your great help.

For all those students who have suffered from the effects of this disaster, you must now face this huge trial during your teens which is a time of great growth for young people.

You may never be able to completely escape from all the pain and worry you now face. It is my hope that by finding at least one thing you can devote yourselves to, whether it is your studies, sports, arts/cultural activities, or volunteering, it will help you face and overcome this sadness in time. Schools will support you in various ways so that you may transcend these adverse circumstances.

I have a request for those students living in areas which were not directly hit by this disaster. Please warmly welcome fellow students taking shelter in your areas. Even if there aren’t such classmates right near you, please think of those students living far away under such severe circumstances as your friends. Please also listen to those who have fallen victim to this earthquake.

Our nation and society must make great changes due to this major disaster. How can the country rebuild itself? Japan has always lived in harmony with nature. What must we do to redeem this way of life?

In the process of reconstruction, it is, of course, important to encourage one another to do our best. At the same time, however, in order to build a new society and new relationships, you must also lend an ear to the weaker voices of the vulnerable who are often silenced by bigger voices.

Kenji Miyazawa, who grew up in the Tohoku region, devoted his entire life to improving the lives of Tohoku farmers. Through the power of arts, science, and religion, Miyazawa tried to help these farmers who often faced poor harvests or crop failures due to the cold weather.

Through accepting the opinions of others, I hope you will be able to make rational decisions by developing true wisdom. At the same time, please foster compassion which enables you to pray and cry for others. Furthermore, do not forget to enjoy life through the arts and sports as well.

There is a phrase from Kenji Miyazawa’s novel Night on the Galactic Railroad.

“I’m no longer afraid of such darkness. I will search for everyone’s true happiness. Let’s go on this journey together wherever it may lead.”

What does Miyazawa mean by “true happiness”? I would like all of you to think about this during this difficult time.

If we reach the point where we find ourselves truly considering the meaning of Miyazawa’s words, I believe we can all progress on this journey together. Eventually, we will be able to reach a new Japan that is far better than before.

Please do not forget that it is not only the Japanese people who are going on this journey. Ever since the Great Tohoku Earthquake hit, Japan has been receiving assistance from all over the world. The international community has commended our people for maintaining their sense of calm even during this time of crisis. The entire planet is with us.

Please do not forget all those firefighters, members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, and the employees of Tokyo Electric Power Company sacrificing their lives to contain the accident at the nuclear plant. There are also the policemen, medical staff and, most of all, please remember the school teachers who risked their lives for you. By continuing to train your body, mind and soul, I hope that in time, you will develop the compassion to be able to devote yourself to others.

The future of Japan lies on your shoulders. Your laughter and smiles will give those who are now fighting hard to support their families and communities, courage and hope.

We will do our best to support all of your efforts. Let’s walk together and find the true meaning of happiness.

ถึงนักเรียนทุกคน

อันที่จริงแล้วเดือนเมษายนนี้ควรจะเป็นช่วงเวลาที่เต็มไปด้วยความหวัง แต่ทว่าฤดูใบไม้ผลิในปีนี้กลับกลายเป็นช่วงเวลาแห่งความเจ็บปวดสำหรับทุกคน คงเป็นที่ทราบกันดีว่ามีเหตุการณ์แผ่นดินไหวขนาดใหญ่และสึนามิตี เมื่อวันที่ 11 มีนาคม ที่ผ่านมา ผมเชื่อว่ามีนักเรียนหลายคนได้สูญเสียสมาชิกในครอบครัว และอาจพลัดพรากจากบ้าน และต้องอาศัยในที่พักอาศัยชั่วคราว

ดังที่หลายคนอาจเคยได้ยินหลายเรื่องราวแห่งความดีงามที่เกิดขึ้นในที่พัก ชั่วคราวเหล่านั้นที่เด็กนักเรียนเหล่านี้ได้ริเริ่มในการช่วยเหลือ ผู้สูงอายุและผู้พิการ ทั้งโดยการช่วยทำความสะอาดและจัดเตรียมอาหาร นักเรียนหลายคนได้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการทำงานอาสาสมัคร ผมขอขอบคุณด้วยใจจริงสำหรับความช่วยเหลืออย่างมากในครั้งนี้

สำหรับ นักเรียนผู้ที่ได้รับความเดือดร้อนจากผลกระทบของภัยพิบัติในครั้งนี้ คงเลี่ยงไม่ได้ที่จะต้องเผชิญบทพิสูจน์ครั้งใหญ่ในชีวิตวัยรุ่น ซึ่งเป็นช่วงเวลาแห่งการเติบโตเป็นผู้ใหญ่

การหลบหนีจากความเจ็บปวดที่ต้องเผชิญอย่างสิ้นเชิง คงเป็นเรื่องยากที่จะทำ ผมก็หวังเพียงแต่ว่า อย่างคุณจะสามารถค้นหาบางอย่างน้อยที่คุณสามารถอุทิศชีวิตเพื่อสิ่งนั้นได้ เพื่อไม่ว่าจะเป็นการศึกษา การกีฬาศิลปะ / กิจกรรมทางด้านวัฒนธรรมหรืออาสาสมัคร ซึ่งจะช่วยให้คุณเผชิญและเอาชนะความโศกเศร้าในเวลานี้ โรงเรียนจะสนับสนุนคุณในรูปแบบต่างๆเพื่อให้คุณผ่านพ้นห้วงเวลาที่เลวร้าย นี้ไป

ผมมีเีิรื่องขอร้องนักเรียนที่อาศัยอยู่ในพื้นที่ซึ่งไม่ได้ รับผลกระทบโดยตรงจากภัยพิบัตินี้ ให้ช่วยโปรดต้อนรับเพื่อนนักเรียนสละที่พักอาศัยในที่พัำกชั่วคราวในพื้นที่ ของคุณอย่างอบอุ่น แต่หากเขาเหล่านั้นไม่ใช่เพื่อนร่วมชั้นของคุณ ขอให้โปรดระลึกถึงเขาประหนึ่งว่าเขาเหล่านั้นคือเพื่อน และโปรดช่วยรับฟังความเคราะห์ร้ายที่เขาต้องประสบ

ประเทศและสังคมของเราคงต้องเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างมากเนื่องจากวิกฤติครั้งใหญ่ ครั้งนี้ เราจะสร้างประเทศขึ้นมาใหม่ได้อย่างไร  เราต้องทำอย่างไรเพื่อให้ได้วิถีชีวิตที่สอดคล้ิองกับธรรมชาติกลับคืนมา

ในการสร้่างบ้านเมืองขึ้นมาใหม่นั้น การให้กำลังใจกันและกันเพื่อพยายามทำให้ดีที่สุดนั้นเป็นเรื่องสำคัญ และในเวลาเดียวกัน การสร้างสังคมและความสัมพันธ์ของคนในสังคมขึ้นมาใหม่นั้น เราคงต้องพยายามรับฟังเสียงที่แผ่วเบาจากผู้ที่อ่อนแอซึ่งมักที่จะถูกกลบโดย เสียงของคนในสังคมที่เสียงดังกว่า

เคนจิ มิยาซาวา, ผู้ซึ่งเติบโตขึ้นในภูมิภาค Tohoku, อุทิศชีวิตทั้งหมดของเขาเพื่อพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตของเกษตรกร Tohoku โดยใช้พลังของ ของศิลปะวิทยาศาสตร์และศาสนา มิยาซาวา เพียรพยายามให้ความช่วยเหลือเกษตรกรที่ยากไร้ เนื่องจากความตกต่ำของผลผลิต หรือ สภาพอากาศที่ไม่เป็นใจ

“ความสุขที่แท้จริง”ในความหมายของมิยาซาถึงอะไรนั้น ผมอยากให้ทุกๆ คนใึคร่ครวญถึงมันในช่่วงเวลาแห่งความยากลำบากนี้

เมื่อไปถึงจุดที่ได้พิจารณาความหมายในคำกล่าว มิยาซาอย่างแท้จริง ผมเชื่อว่าเราทุกคนสามารถเดินทางไปข้างหน้าไปพร้อมๆ กัน แล้วในที่สุดเราจะไปถึงประเทศญี่ปุ่น ที่ก้าวไปได้ไกลกว่าเดิม และดีขึ้นกว่าที่ผ่านมา

โปรดอย่าลืมว่าในการเดินทางครั้งนี้ไม่ได้มีเพียงคนญี่ปุ่นเท่านั้น ที่กำลังเดินทางอยู่ หากแต่เราได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากทั่วทั้งโลก โลกทั้งโลกร่วมเดินทางไปกับเรา และ ชื่นชมคนญี่ปุ่นที่สามารถดำรงตนอย่างสงบแม้ในช่วงเวลาของวิกฤตเช่นนี้

ไม่แน่ใจว่าอ่านจบแล้วจะรู้สึกกันยังไงบ้าง… เพราะเหตุการภัยธรรมชาติครั้งใหญ่ เด็กหลายคนต้องพบจุดเปลี่ยนในชีวิต หวังแต่ว่าเขาจะเข้มแข็ง และยืนหยัดเพื่อที่จะเดินทางหาความสุขที่แท้จริงได้เจอ รวมทั้งมีกำลังที่จะสร้างบ้านเมืองขึ้นมาใหม่ และนำพาประเืทศชาติไปให้ไกลกว่าเดิม..

บางครั้งชีวิตไม่ใช่แค่่ไม่ง่าย หลายคนอาจมีปัญหา และหาทางแก้ไข ที่สำคัญคือเส้นทางที่จะเืดินไปข้างหน้า จุดหมายปลายทาง .. สิ่งที่ต้องการค้นหาใช่สิ่งที่เราต้องการหรือเปล่า

รักตัวเอง รักคนอื่น อย่ายอมแพ้ จุดหมายจะอยู่ไกล และหนทางจะยากลำบาก.. แต่หากเราพยายาม อย่างน้อยที่สุด เราจะไปถึงไหนซักแห่งแน่นอน..
